Why Protein Matters More As You Age: The Key to Muscle, Metabolism & Weight Control
As we get older, our bodies don’t function quite the same as they did in our 20s or 30s. You might feel a little slower getting up in the morning or notice that it takes more effort to lose a few pounds. One of the biggest, and most often overlooked, changes we go through is muscle loss. It’s slow and steady—but over time, it adds up in a big way. And unless we do something about it, it impacts how we feel, how we move, and how we maintain our weight.
One of the best tools we have to combat this? Protein. While many associate protein with athletes or gym rats trying to build muscle, the truth is protein is critical for everyone—especially adults over 40 who want to maintain a strong, healthy body and stay ahead of age-related decline.
Here’s what happens as we age: our bodies naturally begin to lose muscle mass. This process, called sarcopenia, can start as early as your 30s and speeds up each decade. Less muscle not only affects your strength and mobility but also slows down your metabolism. That means you burn fewer calories at rest and can gain fat more easily—even if your diet hasn’t changed much.
Protein helps counteract that. It provides the amino acids your body needs to repair and maintain muscle tissue. When you’re eating enough protein—ideally at each meal—you give your body what it needs to retain muscle, support recovery from workouts, and keep your metabolism humming.
At CT Workout, we work with a lot of men and women over 40, and one of the most common patterns we see is this: they’re eating too little protein and don’t even realize it. They think they’re eating healthy—maybe some eggs for breakfast or grilled chicken at dinner—but when we break down their meals, they’re falling way short of what their body needs to thrive.
A good rule of thumb is to aim for about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you should be getting around 150 grams of protein daily. That may sound like a lot, but when you spread it across three meals and a snack or shake, it’s totally doable—and makes a huge difference.
The benefits of getting enough protein go far beyond muscle. Protein keeps you full and satisfied, which helps reduce mindless snacking and late-night cravings. It helps regulate blood sugar levels, supports hormone health, and even strengthens your immune system. Simply put, it’s the foundation of a healthy, strong body—especially as we age.
Protein also plays a critical role in sustainable fat loss. Many people try to lose weight by cutting calories, but if they’re not prioritizing protein, they often lose muscle along with the fat. That leads to a slower metabolism, decreased strength, and weight that rebounds quickly once they return to old habits. Prioritizing protein allows you to lose fat while preserving lean muscle—a much better long-term strategy.
You don’t need to become a bodybuilder to benefit from more protein. You just need to be intentional. At CT Workout, we show our clients how to build balanced meals with protein at the center—whether that’s lean meats, eggs, fish, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or high-quality plant-based options. We also help them discover protein-rich snacks and supplements that fit into busy lifestyles.
If you’re unsure how much protein you’re eating—or where to even start—we’re here to help. Through our coaching programs and personalized meal plans, we’ll work with you to make protein an effortless part of your daily routine. You’ll quickly notice you feel more energized, more satisfied, and stronger in your workouts.
The bottom line? Aging doesn’t have to mean slowing down. By being proactive about your protein intake, you can stay leaner, stronger, and more energized at every stage of life. It’s one of the simplest and most effective nutrition changes you can make.
And the best part is—it’s never too late to start. Whether you’re 40, 50, or 60+, your body will respond when you give it the right fuel and support it with strength training.
